Tasked with elevating RAF Mildenhall’s annual sci-fi and comic convention, MIL-D-CON, I developed a complete visual identity that transformed the event into a highly engaging experience.

 

My creative approach centred on designing a team of original superhero characters inspired by RAF Mildenhall squadrons. Each hero was based on a Mildenhall squadron patch—for example, the 67th SOS became an owl-winged Airman—creating a unique visual universe rooted in the base’s identity. These characters formed the event’s core intellectual property.

 

I rolled this out across all marketing and event materials, culminating in the MIL-D-CON Guide. The guide combined essential maps and programming details with an original comic story, The Battle of Square D.

 

This story blends local lore with imaginative fiction, drawing inspiration from Cold War mysteries—specifically the 1956 Lakenheath England Radar-Visual UFO Case. The narrative follows our new heroes as they defend the base’s iconic “Square D” from villainous forces, giving the event a fun and meaningful narrative thread.

 

By weaving together local history, bold character design, and a unified marketing strategy, MIL-D-CON has become an unforgettable celebration of creativity, fandom, and community pride.
